Welcome!
The monthly e mail newsletter for business professionals who want growth from Energise Brand Communications Ltd and Rachel Brushfield.
The purpose of this newsletter is to share simple tips and tools to make your life and work easier and help you to market yourself and your business as a unique brand.
This month’s theme is about…………… More health, wealth and happiness.
What does health, wealth and happiness mean to you? Good health is more clear-cut, but success, wealth and happiness are so individual, there’s no right or wrong. It is vital to create your own definitions for a fulfilling life, based on your personal values, i.e. things that are important to you plus what motivates you. It is very common for people to be living their life or doing a job or career based on what they think they should do rather than what they want to do.
Do you ever feel pressure to succeed in our society when actually what you want is a simple, low stress better balanced life? You are not alone. More and more people are thinking about what they really want; what’s important to them, what motivates them and redesigning their lives and jobs to have more of this. Some change career altogether, some downshift and move from city to country, some move to another country or even continent.
Many people define success by money and wealth, but we all know that money does not buy happiness but what it does do is give more choice, which reduces stress. I often find that people give themselves a hard time because they do not think that they are as successful as their peers/they think they should be at their stage in their career, when actually money and status hold low importance for them. Does this ring a bell with you?

What creates health, wealth and happiness?
Based on research globally with the most successful people, the top five factors that create success are:
- Passion
- Clear and motivating SMART goals and vision
- Positive attitude to adversity/risk/change
- Building good relationships and trust
- Persistence/follow up/having a good system in place that works
Source = Ivan Misner, founder of Business Network International. (BNI)
Thinking about yourself, how would you rate yourselves on the above 5 factors?
Often the very things that create health, wealth and happiness are prioritised at the bottom of our to-do lists. Why? Because most of them are important but not urgent activities. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to plan them in your diary, otherwise there will be no time left for them, because urgent tasks are endless, just like SPAM!.
So what are the activities that create health, wealth and happiness?
- Exercise – make sure it’s a type you enjoy and it fits into your lifestyle
- Diet - plan ahead so your diet is mostly comprised of healthy foods and you give your body ‘good fuel’ – vital for well-being
- Water - drink 2 litres a day
- Finance and health reviews – have that health MOT, smear test, dental check, get that will done, see the IFA for a finance MOT, see a mortgage advisor to get a better deal – better late than never
- Networking to build relationships – vital but easily postponed or conducted in an unfocused way
- Personal and professional development – keep your skills up to date. It is even more important than ever to do this with so much career change
- Goals and vision – define, set and review so you’re always living life/with your business moving forward ‘on purpose’
- Relaxation – do self-nurturing activities. Look after yourself
- Quality time - planning quality time with people and doing activities that energise you
- Reviews – think about how you can save time and money, and also how you could make more money and maximise time
- Reflecting and having quiet ‘check-in’ time with yourself so you don’t neglect your emotional side
- Planning – diarise time to a) think and prepare before key meetings and b) reflect on learnings and what next afterwards
- Being time – sit quietly, meditate or simply spend time in nature – this can nurture your spirit and help to cope with our frenetic world
How coaching helps you create more health, wealth and happiness
- It helps you identify your personal or business vision, mission and values
- You set compelling SMART goals that you feel motivated to achieve
- It creates actions designed for you by you so the chances of success are greater
- It provides rare time for you to stop, think and prioritise so that you’re neither a roadrunner nor an ostrich with your head in the sand
- It enables you to look at the big picture of what’s going on so you can see how different things interrelate, gain insights, make connections and plan actions
- It identifies and explores the blocks in the way to make the change you choose happen
- Accountability ensures that the actions you set yourself happen rather than ‘you just don’t get around to doing it’
- It pinpoints practical things you can do to increase your happiness and fulfilment by living life to your values not other peoples
- It explores and changes the limiting beliefs stopping you from having more health, wealth and happiness
10 simple tips to help you create more health, wealth and happiness
Here’s 10 simple tips that will increase the likelihood of the important but not urgent things happening:
- Take yourself on a date at least once a month doing something that you love
- Plan in regular reviews with yourself to review where you are at, where you are heading and how to get there. (N.B. A coach can be useful in this as it’s hard to be objective about yourself and see everything as you are so close to yourself)
- Think about what seasonal things affect you or your business and put reminders in your electronic/paper diary soon after the end of the calendar and financial years to provide triggers for health, financial reviews and seasonal marketing activities
- Get a coach/mentor or buy a self-coaching book and achieve more faster plus increase your fulfilment
- Plan regular time for yourself and people you care about
- Write a list of things that you have always wanted to do but never done and put them in order of priority. Make them happen.
- Reflect on what makes you happy and spend some time at the end of each week reflecting on this aspect of your life and what you can change/influence to increase your happiness levels
- Ask yourself the question: “What does success mean to me?”
- Plan exercise time in your diary each week and choose something simple and easy e.g. parking further away/getting off the tube or bus earlier than you need to and walking the extra distance
- Every day put 5 portions of fruit/vegetables and 2 litres of water in small units (e.g. glasses or half litre bottles) where you can see them and set the goal of getting through them by the end of the day
A special client example; Duncan Goose, Global Ethics
All our clients deserve a mention. Why? Because they do something about making change happen rather than just talking about it.
In the week following Live8 on Sat, two of our clients. Duncan and Claire Goose, brother and sister deserve to be featured because they have made positive change possible for the world as well as for themselves. Both are lovely people, understated and very inspiring and talented in different ways.
We originally coached Duncan when he worked as new business director in advertising, helping him to define new goals, which he quickly achieved, including putting down some roots by buying a home and dog, having realised his goal of travelling the world by motorbike. It was clear that his values were different and bigger than that of the advertising industry and, inspired by his travels, he had a real desire to put something back and help the world.
Duncan recommended Energise (we get 90% of our clients by word of mouth recommendation) to his sister Claire Goose, actress in Casualty and Waking the dead..
In a feature in Hello magazine ( 30 June 2005) Clare talks about her coaching. Knowing that she wanted certain things in her life by the time she was 30, she sought the services of a life coach. “I wasn’t expecting to meet someone that fast. I’d said “I’d like to meet someone – ooh hello” she jokes. It was quite a shock. With the help of the coach (Energise), she identified four goals – to meet a life partner, run the New York Marathon, buy her house and achieve certain career aspirations.. So far she has achieved all four.” I was pleased to do so well so quickly” she says.
Even we were taken aback at the speed with which Claire achieved her goals!
Duncan decided to resign from full time employment and has spent the last 12 months working hard, without a salary, on a cause that he feels passionately about - helping people suffering in many ways from the lack of good quality readily available drinking water around the world. Believing in helping people to help themselves, a key principle of coaching, he set about on a remarkable journey against the odds, a minnow vs., the great whales of global drinks conglomerates, to launch a mineral water, ‘One,’ with 100% of the proceeds of the charity going to build wells using an innovative roundabout device. During the day children, full of energy, play on the roundabout having fun and powering the water up from the earth for drinking and also irrigation. Simple and very effective.
One has been the official mineral water for Live8 in London and Make Poverty History, sales have been achieved by listings including Somerfield plus on-line sales, and One has been featured in Hello, The Sunday Telegraph, The Guardian, Marketing Week,The Grocer, and he has been interviewed on ITN News. Duncan is inspirational in his vision and what he has enabled to be achieved so far.
Our input has been a drop in the ocean with many other individuals and companies helping Duncan make the project possible. Energise have acted as an energising catalyst, helping him stay on track and find ways around the many obstacles in his path to realise his vision and achieve his goal. We have also been an ‘energising connector’ (the job title on our business card), introducing him to www.bluebear.co.uk who have done the PR, and other useful resources/contacts.
Says Duncan “Rachel from Energise has helped me to stay on track, championing me, celebrating the successes and helping me to believe that my vision was possible, plus identifying ways around the inevitable obstacles that have been in my path”
Ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. Dare to dream. Just imagine what you might be capable of?
